ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

"Can personal friendships grow into national friendships in such manner as to promote the interests of peace?...

Yes, but it is a dream that we can make come true. Our confidence must never falter. I believe that there is justification for our faith, in the lives of great men such as these, who were faithful to their trusts, who could be friendly, and who were "what they seemed."

Paul Harris The Rotarian magazine 1925

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about club goal setting.

Clubs are asked to set annual giving goals for the Every Rotarian, Every Year effort. Since clubs began establishing their own goals two years ago, annual giving to The Rotary Foundation has surged from $55 million in 2002-03 to nearly $85 million in 2004-05. We’re asking every Rotarian to support our Foundation with a financial contribution, every year. At the President-elect Training Seminar this spring, our club president-elect was  asked to submit an annual giving goal for the upcoming year.

History has proven that clubs that set goals follow through with them. As our club sets its goal for the coming year, we should also remember to measure our success by the number of lives we changed and saved.

opening

Today’s “Welcoming Team” were the honorable father-and-son team of Al & Brian Owen.

Chuck Pattishall provided the Club invocation and the Honorable Ron Stone led the Club in the salute to the American flag, after which the strong voice of Van Keck shouted “Go Ducks!”  Were the Ducks in a tournament or something?

MAIN EVENT

Because of the length of the program and the time necessary for scoring the contestants, President Art turned the meeting over to Ray Fields who explained how the Rotary Four-Way Test Speech Contest works and expressed appreciation to Frank Bumpus, Waldo Farnham and Maryalice Russell who with him listened to 17 of  450 contestants in the two middle schools. All 450 of the students received a certificate of participation in this year's competition. Before calling the first speaker to the podium, Ray reminded us that March is Literacy Month and that he had the most fun these last two weeks distributing dictionaries to the 4th graders since his involvement with Rotary's youth exchange program.

As the Rotary Four-Way Test speech contest is a part of Rotary's literacy program. Ray then presented the four speakers one-by-one who gave their speeches and individual Rotary members scored them.

Next Ray explained that this is the first year that we have conducted the Rotary Four-Way Test  Essay contest. He then introduced Nicole Berry, winner of the contest among local 7th grade students, who proceeded to read her winning essay. Following her presentation, she was presented a First Place Certificate.

Later in the meeting, Ray called the four speech contestants to the front of the room,. Destiny Carson, Sandra Pinion, Ehren Castle and Sara Weinrich, then came forward and Ray announced that this year’s winner of the Rotary Four-Way Test speech contest was Ehren Castle.  Each of the contestants was given a citation and a savings bond.
