ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is an update on our Polio Eradication efforts. Recently, the Advisory Committee on Polio Eradication (ACPE), the global and technical oversight body of the Polio Eradication Initiative, concluded that polio could be eradicated within the next 6 months everywhere, except in Nigeria, provided adequate financial resources are found and political will is maintained. The World Health Organization further advises that eradication in Nigeria could follow within another 6-12 months. National Immunization Days will be held in all endemic and high-risk countries this spring to help ensure that this important milestone is met.

The PolioPlus Partners Program is currently accepting donations to support these NIDs and will match contributions at US$.50 per dollar donated. More information is available at www.rotary.org.

Today’s “Welcoming Team” were Russ Rainwater and Elise Hui.

John Larsen shared an Indian prayer with the Club and Lori Rumbaugh led the Club in the salute to the American flag.

INTRODUCTION OF VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS

Ron Noble introduced his son David Noble, a freshman at Mac High.

Dave Pfendler introduced Marion Reynolds who is part of the administrative team at Virginia Garcia Clinic.

Kris Olson introduced Lori Payne and Mark & Susan Anderson, parents of students to be recognized as Students of the Month today.

From right to left above Walt Haight, with flourish and admirable accuracy, introduced Amelia Larson, outbound exchange student candidate to Japan, Narumi Sato, 2004-2005 inbound exchange student from Japan, Alison Nordin,  rebound exchange student to Germany and James Gorry, our current inbound exchange student from Great Britain.

Dan Corrigan introduced his wife Mary, who accompanied him to lunch today.

MEMBER RECOGNITION & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ryan Arzner, handling the member recognition duties “this mornin',” recognized Ron Benek for his birthday.  Ron in turn admitted to being a bit depressed at the size of his check to the Club.

Kris Olson reported that Jon Triest’s daughter had her photo in the Linfield magazine.  Since Jon was unable to be present today, he asked Kris to bring his fine of $1.50—which was all he had on him at the time!

Chuck Pattishall confessed to standing up the group last evening who put labels into the new dictionaries and volunteered to make a huge donation to the Club.

Bruce Huffman reported that Jeff Long’s son and the rest of the Mac High basketball team won their playoff game by 8 points this week.  Jeff reported proudly that his son was selected to the All Conference First Team!

Walt Haight gave a spirited though short promo for the Gallery Theater’s production of Fiddler On The Roof.

John Larsen noted that new member Nancy Nelson was prepared for being recognized for her birthday and Ryan didn’t even have her on the list.  In typical Rotarian fashion, she made the contribution anyway.

At the nudging of several, Ryan proudly reported that he is the father of a second baby girl!  In recognition of the auspicious event, he shared some recently-gained wisdom in the form of a list of things not to say to a pregnant woman. In its tradition, the club passed the pot and raised $165.00 for the beginning of Macie Fern Arzner's college fund.

President Art invited Narumi Sato to share a few words with the Club.  Among other things, she proudly announced that she has been accepted into university and will begin her studies in April.  This was the nudge that prompted her to make this quick trip back to McMinnville.

Kris Olson led the Club in recognizing the February Students of the Month,  Sera Dittle-Payne and Ashley Anderson

Ashley is the daughter of Mark and Susan Anderson.  She has a younger brother, Timothy (11), a 6th grader at Patton Middle School, and a younger sister, Kristin (15), a freshman at MHS.

Ashley attended Springhill Elementary School in Wisconsin, and then Adams and Grandhaven Elementary, and Patton Middle School before enrolling at McMinnville High School in her freshman year.

Ashley currently holds a 4.0 grade point average (4.091 weighted) and is ranked 1st in her graduating class of 456 seniors, she has been on honor roll each semester throughout her high school career, has completed the requirements of her Certificate of Initial Mastery, and now a student-of-the-month recipient.  This semester, she is enrolled in Advanced Placement Statistics, Advanced Placement English, Yearbook, Advanced Placement Environmental Science, French V, and United States Government.

While in high school, Ashley has been active in our school’s soccer, cross country, and track programs.  She was recognized as our most valuable JV athlete in track, and was recently honored as cross country’s most inspirational athlete.  Additionally, she is the co-founder and co-president of the Environmental Club, is the Key Club secretary, a member of the National Honor Society, a member of the new Habitat for Humanity Club, and was selected for a Presidential Service Award and was a Daughter’s of the American Revolution scholarship nominee.

Outside of school, she has volunteered at the Farm Sanctuary in Orland, California for the past two summers, is a faith in Action volunteer, and loves yoga.  This is a very civic minded young woman, concerned for the well-being of others (including animals), and for the improvement of our world.

Her future plans include application to Lewis & Clark College, Southern Oregon University, and the Honor College at the University of Oregon (each of which she has been accepted to).  She also has applications out to Whitman, Pitzer, Oberlin, and Boston University.  She plans to major in the sciences, possibly Biology, with an emphasis in Medicine.

I asked Ashley what her best memories of high school have been, as well as her worst.  She told me that her Microbiology course with Mrs. Gaskin and cross country were by far her best, and worst……witnessing the teasing of others.  She said it really makes her sad to see others teased.  Again, concerned for the well-being of others.

Serra is the daughter of Alejandro Dittel and Lori Payne.  She has a younger brother, Marshall (13), a 7th grader at Patton Middle School.

Serra attended Martin Luther King Elementary School in Edison, New Jersey, and then John Adams and Duniway Middle School before enrolling at McMinnville High School in her freshman year.

Serra currently holds a 3.826 grade point average and is ranked in the top 10% of her graduating class of 456 seniors, she has been on honor roll each semester throughout her high school career, has completed the requirements of her Certificate of Initial Mastery, and now a student-of-the-month recipient.  This semester, she is enrolled in Jazz Band, Advanced Placement Calculus, Advanced Placement English, Symphonic Band, Honors Physics, United States Government, and Spanish for Spanish Speakers.

While in high school, Serra has been active in our school’s soccer and swimming programs.  She was recognized as an all-league soccer player, has lettered in both soccer and swimming, and has been a News Register athlete-of-the-week award winner.  Additionally, she is member of the Environmental Club, International Club, Key Club, National Honor Society, and of course the Symphonic and Jazz Bands.

Outside of school, she has volunteered on a Mexico Mission Trip, and participates on the Olympic Developmental Program Team in soccer.

Her future plans include application to St. Mary’s College, Oregon State University, and the University of Puget Sound.  She plans to major in Biology and/or Health Services, and hopes to work for Doctors without Boarders.  Just yesterday, I received a copy of an e-mail to our band director, Jeff Hornick, from the Director of Bands at Pacific University that reads in part, “Dear Serra, I was very impressed by your playing when I worked with your band this week.  In fact, I was so impressed that I would like to offer you a music scholarship to come to Pacific University.  You need not audition again, I am satisfied that you qualify for our top music scholarship and I am authorized to make this offer to you.”  It must be nice to be wanted!

I asked Serra what her best memories of high school have been, as well as her worst.  She told me that going to the State Swimming Championships as a sophomore was by far her best, and the worst……she said she’d have to think about that one.  Well?

MAIN EVENT

President Art introduced Mark Green, Director, A. E. Coleman Chair in Family Business for the Austin Family Business Program at Oregon State University.  He spoke of the unique nature of family businesses, pointing out that 80% of all businesses in the US are family businesses.  In Oregon, they make up 90% of all business.  One of the primary services of the Austin Family Business Program is to consult with families who want assistance in their succession planning.

CLOSING

President Art expressed appreciation for the program asking our speaker to sign a book that will be presented to the early reader program with one of our new speaker gifts, a pen engraved with the Rotary wheel and our club name. He then adjourned the meeting.
