ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about our scholarship programs. Ambassadorial Scholarships is one of the world's largest privately funded international scholarships programs. Last year, 737 Ambassadorial Scholars from 70 different countries studied and served as ambassadors of goodwill in over 60 countries. The Rotary World Peace Fellow program had 64 Peace Fellows from 27 different countries studying at the seven different Peace Centers. Although the program is still young, we are already seeing our graduates take important positions. One graduate, Arnoldas Pranckevicius is currently serving as the domestic policy advisor to Mr. Valdas Adamkus, President of Lithuania. Another, Richard Gee, is serving as senior legal advisor to the chief electoral officer for Afghanistan. Let’s make sure our local community is aware of our commitment to education and world peace through conflict resolution.

opening

Today’s “Welcoming Team” were Walt Haight and Bruce Dickson.

Bob Rhoads, prior to his invocation, provided the Club with significant information on recently departed Bob Thompson, including the fact that his Step-father, Robert A. "Bob" Manchester was the President of Rotary International in  1976-77.  Any who may want to give a donation in his honor have been asked to give it to the Rotary Club.

Jack Thornton led the Club in the salute to the American flag.

INTRODUCTION OF VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS

Bruce Huffman introduced James Gorry, inbound exchange student from Great Britain.

Ryan Arzner introduced Brandon Molloy, of Express Personnel.

Carole Benedict introduced her husband Andy, whom she brought because we had meatloaf today and she does not cook meatloaf which goes to show that there’s lots of reasons for attending Rotary

Walt Haight introduced his wife, Dawn Graff-Haight, Linfield Professor and Chair of the Department of Health, Human Performance and Athletics.  Accompanying them to Rotary today were three friends from Japan, Professor Koichi Nariyama, Ryoko Suwa and Etsuko Hirayama, who are visiting the States.

MEMBER RECOGNITION & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ryan Arzner, handling the member recognition duties “this morning,” recognized Al Owen for his 12th (“this time around”) anniversary and   made a contribution to the Club.

Bruce Dickson brought a donation for the Club in celebration of his 23rd anniversary.  But instead of him writing out the check, his wife volunteered to do it to express her appreciation for their years together.  Bruce, was that really a check for 23 cents?

Ryan recognized new member Russ Rainwater his highly visible presence at the Mayor’s Ball, leading the crowd in line dancing.  (How much did Russ donate to avoid having to do some boot stomping at Rotary?)

Ryan reminded the Club of our tradition of passing the hat in recognition of the birth of a baby. In this case Rowan Easterday, Mom,  Erin Stephenson reports that while he was born last year she is returning after her maternity leave. Rowan now weighs 14+ pounds. The club collected $175.00 to start Rowan's education fund.

Richard Weed proudly reported that his son has been accepted by the University of Florida for graduate school.

Dan Gardner was appropriately hassled by John Swenson for having won the Mayor’s Ball free trip to Argentina, provided by Evergreen Aviation.  I believe Dan was smiling so big that he almost broke his face!

Dale Tomlinson reported that the Air Force Band will be giving a concert in McMinnville next Wednesday at the Community Center and one of the band members is none other than a son of fellow Rotarian Scott Chambers!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Art announced that we have some tickets for Rotarians to the McMinnville High basketball game against Canby.

Art explained the next steps for the Dictionary Project and invited people to help with inserting labels March 1st.

Rotary International President Bill Boyd
will be in Beaverton to meet new Rotary members (those with 3 years or less membership in Rotary) at a morning reception  on Saturday, March 24th. A  picnic open to all Rotarians will follow the reception. Members interested in participating can go to the District 5100 website for more information and a registration form.

MAIN EVENT

Ray Fields introduced Dennis Wickam, District Governor Nominee, who grew up in Pendleton, graduated from Linfield and received his MD from OHSU.  He is now the Medical Examiner for Clark County, WA, and does autopsies on all unusual or traumatic deaths, including homicides, suicides, still-births, deaths in jails, deaths that may relate to a public health threat and unclaimed bodies.  His presentation was quite a topic for a lunch-time talk.

CLOSING

President Art expressed appreciation for the program and adjourned the meeting.
