ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

IN MEMORY OF OUR DEPARTED

WHO PASSED AWAY JANUARY 30, 2007

SOMETHING NEW

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about the Paul Harris Society. The Paul Harris Society is a district-administered recognition for those who elect to personally contribute US$1,000 or more each year to the Annual Programs Fund. Started three years ago by Past District Governor Wayne Cusick in District 5340 in San Diego, USA, societies have now been adopted in more than 80 districts worldwide. Individual districts handle all associated recognition for this program, however, the Trustees recently endorsed the Paul Harris Society, and TRF is developing a standard wearable recognition item. Paul Harris Society contributions are eligible towards Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member, Paul Harris Fellow, Multiple Paul Harris Fellow and Major Donor recognition.

INTRODUCTION OF VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS

Eve Barnett was introduced by Ray Fields.  Eve was a long time member of our club until she, Norm, and their boys moved to Vancouver, WA.   Eve is District coordinator for Interact.

Andy Benedict was with us again, much to the pleasure of Carol Benedict.

Jerry Sherwood, (left) Past president of our club and now an honorary club member  was introduced by Dale Tomlinson.

MEMBER RECOGNITION & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Chuck Pattishall presided—something was said about holding the microphone in Elvis style. Absent but needing to be recognized were:  Rosemari Davis, Dick Ecker, Ed Gormley (perhaps preparing for the Ball tomorrow), Dan Corrigan and Skip Huwaldt.

Johannes Goddik seemed a bit surprised when asked to comment on his upcoming anniversary.  He recovered very nicely.  This coming Monday he and Roelie will be celebrating their 51st anniversary.   CONGRATULATIONS!!

Guy Everingham had two brags about his daughter.  He and Vickie were very pleased when she became engaged a few months ago.  Additionally, his daughter has gone through the arduous task of trying to get into Physicians Assistant school.  She was accepted out of a pool of hundreds of applicants.

Ray and Yasuko Fields will celebrate their 17th anniversary February 3rd.  “We never would have met if I had not been for Rotary.”

Ryan Arzner needed to apologize for a recent incident in a local restaurant involving his 6 year-old.  It seems that some crayons got away from the child and clobbered President Art in the face.  Despite the seriousness of the incident no one was transported to the ER.

Paul Elias recognized Walt Haight for recent acknowledgement of service by Walt, his wife and daughter to the community.

Walt recently welcomed home his wife Dawn and daughter Delaney (re-bound student of ours who spent last year in Japan) after leading a Linfield class examining the health practices in Japan related to the longevity of Japanese folks.  Johannes Goddik was a great help in getting one of our club flags to Dawn in time for her to present the flag to a club they visited in Japan.

Walt also publicized the “Singing Valentine” program benefiting the Jerry Paine Scholarship Fund and Gallery Theater.  For only $35 your sweetheart would be serenaded with two songs from a real barbershop quartet, and receive a beautiful rose and a personalized card with a special message from you.  A GREAT WAY TO IMPRESS THAT SPECIAL PERSON WHILE BENEFITTING TWO GREAT RESOURCES!!!!!  Contact Walt Haight (503-435-1826; or 971-237-3516).

Eve Barnett gave a brief update on her sons—who were often part of our club meetings—before the Barnett’s move to the Portland area.  Sam is at U of O and involved in starting the Rotaract club there.  Their other son is at Mountain View High School.

Chuck Pattishall introduced the next part of the meeting warning that there might be some violation of the Four-Way Test before our very eyes.  Brent Adams, Corey Graham and Dan Gardner came forward to introduce a presentation of “Rotary International Projects”—the title of the first picture we all assumed to be followed by some official Rotary propaganda.  In fact we enjoyed a series of pictures of President Art’s childhood to honor his 50th birthday.  Art was a bit surprised!Surely the impish and plucky kid we saw as he moved through childhood was actually, even then, a tri-athlete in training.  The ceremony continued as Corey placed THE OFFICIAL KING ARTHUR velvet cloak around his shoulders, put the elegant fur-lined crown on his head, and presented him with the official scepter. (Writer’s question—have we seen a President be so very red-in-the-face in recent years?  And, recall Art’s confusing use of the word “moderation” during his vocational talk.)  Dan continued with a 1957sports trivia game oriented around questions in which Art would pay $1 if he missed a question and Dan would contribute a $1 if a member of the audience correctly answered the question.  After dramatic failures (by Art and the club) to answer questions about the Tour de France winner, Formula 1 Champion, Wimbleton Tennis Champ, etc., Walt Haight did correctly observe that the winner of the 1957 World Series were the Brewers.  GREAT JOB BY BRENT, DAN AND COREY AND CONGRATS TO PRESIDENT ART.  (The two took complete blame and noted that Brenda Bradley was faultess!)

Wayne Bailey announced a cooperative venture between Youngberg Hill Winery and Henderson House.  On July 10th the Winery will host a benefit for Henderson House involving auctioning wine barrels decorated by local artists. Wayne has collected barrels for 51 local wineries.  Much like displays of large art forms in cities (recall the decorated cows on the streets of downtown Portland) the painted barrels will be displayed around town beginning about June 1.  Businesses could partner with artists to paint the barrels.  “We hope to raise more money for Henderson House than ever before.”  Contact Wayne if you are interested.

MAIN EVENT

Pam Ferrah, Workforce Analyst, Marion, Polk and Yamhill Counties, is an economist for the Oregon Employment Department. She discussed labor market data from our tri-county area.

The “unemployment rate” is a very misunderstood figure.  It is not the number of people collecting unemployment checks.  Rather, it is an estimate of who’s looking for work (only about 1/3 of the unemployed collect unemployment checks).  That is, it is a percentage of the labor force (those working and those looking for work added together).

The unemployment rate is lower now than anytime in the last 6 years.  Business owners are having a difficult time finding skilled workers.

Yamhill County unemployment rate has been dropping over the last years.  Today it is 4.9% down from 5.4% last year.  About 1/3 to 1/2 of the unemployed in our county are gathering unemployment.

CLOSING

President Art presented a book to SMART in honor of Pam's presentation today. He closed the meeting by announcing the next two meetings as being February 9, our District Governor Nominee  Dennis Wickham  and February 16, James Gorry our inbound student from England
