ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about how our Rotary Foundation continues to be so effective because it matches money with volunteerism! In the words of Arch C. Klumph, founder of The Rotary Foundation, “Money alone does little good. Individual service is helpless without money. The two together can be a godsend to civilization.” Your financial resources and your time, energy and talent are vital to the Rotary mission. Every dollar contributed goes to supporting our programs and keeps the engine of our Rotary Foundation running throughout the world

opening

Dale Tomlinson got the meeting started before President Art made it to the podium.  What initially appeared to be a takeover turned out to be plug for the Kids on the Block / Mayor’s Charity Ball raffle for a Buenos Aires vacation for two.

President Art Bradley then officially called our meeting to order and thanked greeters Kelly Odegaard and Jack Crabtree.

The inspirational moment was provided by John Larsen who recapped the reasoning behind RI President William Boyd’s theme Lead the WayCorey Graham followed by leading the Pledge of Allegiance.

INTRODUCTION OF VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS

Kris Olsen introduced Mac Hi students of the month and parents:  Brittany Sampson and parents Rick and Karyn Sampson, Stephanie Miller, Ashley Braxling and mom Debbie Gephart, and Jon Boundy with parents Mike and Jody Boundy.

Kelly Odegaard introduced outbound candidate Amelia Larson.

Brent Adams introduced guest of the club Nancy Nelson from the Virginia Garcia Health Clinic.  Brent pointed out this would be her last week as a guest of the club since her induction is anticipated for next week.

Paul Elias introduced inbound James Gorry.

Steve Fitzpatrick introduced visiting Rotarian Tom Vail.

Carole Benedict introduced another visiting Rotarian, Jan Winder – President of Newberg noon.

And Ryan Arzner introduced guest of club Brandon Malloy from Express Temps.

MEMBER RECOGNITION & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Chuck Pattishall handled member recognition for Ryan Arzner.  When asked by Chuck if he was going to miss the meeting, Ryan said, “No, just don’t want to do it.”  Chuck began to find out why when he started looking for a number of Rotarians, all missing in action.

Things picked up with Steve Macy who was recognized for both an anniversary and birthday.  Steve added forty years with JacE to his sixty years and come up with a $100 contribution to the Foundation.

Tom Hellie was recognized for twenty years with Julie Olds.  Their anniversary was celebrated in San Diego.

Bruce Huffman decided to introduce wife Esther at this time.  They are celebrating three wonderful years together with three events.  First, lunch at Rotary; second, dinner at the Golden Valley; and finally, a week in Southern California.

Brent Adams was recognized for his 49th birthday.  He’s already worried about the big five-oh next year.

Not yet worried about a “milestone” was Ron Noble, recognized for his 47th birthday.

Chuck then made an attempt at fining Guy Everingham – something about sitting at the wrong table. He quickly moved to the next topic (good idea) with a well-received list of dumb criminal acts.

Art then formally welcomed Gary Eastlund back to the club by presenting him with his name badge that he was already wearing.

Visiting Rotarian Jan Winder asked if we have a portion of the meeting for brags and announcements saying she would pay if she could have the microphone.  We heard an “oops” from Chuck having had so much fun with his stories that he forgot that part of member recognition.  He eventually paid for the oversight.  Jan went on to announce Newberg’s annual auction on Saturday the 3rd and that she had raffle tickets to sell.

Wayne Bailey announced the arrival of 8 pound 14 ounce Aspen, his and Nicolette’s third daughter.  Art continued the tradition of passing the hat for the Bailey’s and presented him with a “wad” of money at the end of the meeting.

Visiting Rotarian Tom Vail announced the McMinnville Sunrise annual crab and oyster feed Sunday from 11 to 4.  He had, just for us, three discounted tickets – first come, first served.

Bob Emrick announced a class he is offering March 13 to 15.  Check with Bob for details.

STUDENTS OF THE MONTH

Kris Olsen finally made it to the podium with his students of the month for December and January.

Starting with the first student on his left, senior Ashley Braxling was recognized for Computer Science in January.  She is the daughter of Mike and Deb Gephart and has a younger sister, Riley.  She holds a 3.737 GPA and has been on the honor roll throughout her high school career.

Next is senior Brittany Sampson, recognized for Vocal Music in December.  Brittany is no stranger to our Friday meeting having performed with the Twilighters.  She is the daughter of Rick and Karyn Sampson and has a younger sister, Kathryn.  She holds a 3.66 GPA and has been on the honor roll throughout her high school career.

Senior Stephanie Miller was recognized in December for Mathematics.  She is the daughter of Brian and Buffy Miller and has an older brother, Brad, and a younger sister, Kelly.  Holding a GPA of 3.83 she achieved the rank of top 10 in her graduating class of 453 seniors as well as staying on the honor roll throughout high school..

Finally, senior Jon Boundy was introduced for his recognition this month in Industrial and Engineering Systems.  Jon is the son of Mike and Jody Boundy.  He has an older sister, Jenna.  His 3.72 GPA has also placed him on the honor roll throughout his high school career.

Congratulations to all students of the month!

MAIN EVENT

Our guest speaker was introduced by Jack Thornton.

Dan Shyrock, representing the Yamhill Valley Visitor’s Association, started by drawing a distinction between Yamhill Valley and Yamhill County.  The name Yamhill Valley was selected because the Association extends beyond the County and truly represents the whole valley and surrounding attractions.  He also recognized that he was making the presentation in front of his “boss”, Nicole Wahlberg, Association President.

Their mission (paraphrased) is to “attract tourism without eroding quality of life”.  He said the address of the Association is in downtown McMinnville and that always draws ooo’s and ah’s from others in the industry as “the place” to be in Oregon.

The Association is partially funded by some money from the Oregon lodging tax.  Its primary support comes from member dues.  He listed a number of members and pointed out some surprising members that are not directly in the tourist industry but benefit from support services and the dollars the industry brings to the area.

Of course, the wine industry is the major attraction.  The State draws $92 million in revenue from wine tourism with the Yamhill Valley attracting the largest share with its 56 wineries.

Rotarians were provided with the Association’s Visitor’s Guide and Dan reported that the guide now has a circulation of 40,000 all over the west coast.

He shared the Association’s web site:  www.yamhillvalley.org.  Every member gets a page on the web site even if they don’t have their own site.  He also said that they represent www.oregon.com and invited Rotarians to explore that site as well.

During the Q&A, Bob Emrick provided a surprising statistic.  250 cruise ships visit Astoria every year!  That industry wants to make their stays more complete by offering tours into wine country.  Jan Winder pointed out that the Guide should be updated to include the new golf course in Newberg.  John Swenson has witnessed some incredible spending with one client investing over $25,000 in wine in one day.  Luckily, John was driving!!

CLOSING

Art thanked Dan with the donation of a book about Frogs and adjourned the meeting with ring of the bell.
