ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

"Faith, hope, charity and clean business, these four and the greatest of these is clean business. Charity sometimes destroys initiative and demoralizes character; clean business never does. If business is clean, there will be much less need of charity because clean business means not only a fair deal to the buyer, but also a living wage to the employee. Rotary will continue to be charitable but it can do more than that; let it remove the cause of that which makes charity necessary.”

Paul P. Harris in his message to the 1916 Convention in Cincinnati.

MAIN EVENT

Jack Crabtree introduced our main event of the day.  Brad Berry, District Attorney for Yamhill County, was introduced to present information on Methamphetamine.  He warned us that, while he likes to bring good news and positive topics to us, the Meth topic is not a very positive topic.  He gave some sobering statistics:

1.      Oregon ranks 5th in the nation for Meth labs

2.      Oregon ranks 3rd in the nation for “Major” Meth labs

3.      Yamhill County, with a population of over 90,000 and growing, is experiencing a growing crime rate

4.      Meth filings in the District Attorney’s office are up from 200 in the year 2000 to 300 in 2006

5.      The percent of drug cases that are Meth-related is up from 60% in 2000 to 80% in 2006

6.      The number of County Sheriff deputies has decreased

7.      Funding from the Youth Investment Fund has decreased

8.      The “Treatment” caseload is down in the County, but this is bad news since the caseload is a direct result of a reduced staff to handle the cases.

9.      85% of property crimes in Yamhill County are Meth-related.

Berry stated that the solution to the problem is a 3-tier approach:  Enforcement, Prevention and Treatment.  Working on only one or two of these solutions will not solve our problem.

To help solve the problem, a group of citizens is working very hard on a levy to provide funding for all 3 tiers of the solution.  The levy would raise $1.7 million in 2007.  Members were encouraged to consider the levy.

More information on the Meth problem in Yamhill County, and solutions to the problem, can be found at Methlevy@co.yamhill.or.us

CLOSING

President Art  presented Brad with a book that will be given to the McMinnville School District early reader program in the name of the District Attorney’s office.  He thanked Brad for a very informative presentation.

Art Bradley also shared that next week’s program will be on the “Partners in Service Program.
