ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"
SOMETHING NEW
The new District 5100 website is up and running. You will want to check there at least weekly, as opposed to weakly, to see what is happening in and around the District. This week there is an opportunity to give some anonymous feedback about our club. Scroll down to the bottom of the home page to where it says "Provide Your Opinion to District 5100". The survey is very short and will be most helpful to the District and our club.

Rotarians had the opportunity to meet our new inbound exchange student James Gorry from the United Kingdom who paired up with Richard Weed to greet Rotarians at the door.
Art Bradley called the meeting to order at 12:15 with the traditional ringing of the bell.
Doug Bartlett provided our inspirational moment and Gene Zinda led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
INTRODUCTION OF VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS
Scott Chambers introduced son Kyle who is entering the 7th grade at Duniway Middle School and will setting out for rigors of cross-country.
Bruce Dickson introduced son Keith who is returning to Oregon as a Japanese major.
Walt Haight introduced Rhonda Fabreth (right) representing the Henderson House. Walt and Rhonda were joined by Walt’s daughter Delaney (center) having recently returned from Japan.
Richard Weed formally introduced James Gorry and announced that James had just completed his first week in the United States.
MEMBER RECOGNITION & ANNOUNCEMENTS
Chuck Pattishall greeted Rotarians with a “howdy” as he took the reigns of Member Recognition.
Chuck began with an attempt to locate a few missing Rotarians and finally hit pay dirt with Kelly Odegaard’s anniversary. Kelly reported giving Lorie a diamond necklace to match some earrings. Lorie felt that the diamond was “too big”. Better that than the alternative!
Next up was Waldo Farnham who proudly announced that he provided Bonnie with a brand new Kubota 50HP 4WD tractor for their anniversary. Bob Emrick chimed in by sharing a story that he had spied Waldo on their hillside unable to maneuver the tractor uphill. Waldo countered by explaining that the tractor observed had been returned for a bigger one more capable of handling the hill.
Dennis Gray joined in the stories of exotic anniversary gifts by announcing his 23rd anniversary gift to Michele of a brand new drill press. Some Rotarians were thinking that he might be introducing a new wife next year.
Steve Fitzpatrick agreed that he had a birthday and turned the tables on Chuck by challenging him to be a gambler. All the reluctant Chuck had to do was guess Steve’s age. There was some sort of convoluted payoff scheme that only a CPA could come up with involving a payment by Steve of $100 if Chuck guessed right and a payment by Chuck of a much smaller amount if he guessed wrong. After establishing that Chuck could not ask questions, he guessed “50”. Wrong! BUT – that was the year Steve was born and that should have counted for something.
Paul Elias put some money in the pot bragging that he acquired a new daughter four weeks ago. Congratulations Paul.
Finally Chuck gave Rotarians an opportunity to make a $20 contribution for cancer research and obtain a high quality U of O hat in return. Informational folders had been distributed to each table. Chuck ended his Member Recognition with a series of jokes that warmed the crowd up for President Art’s return to the podium.
For those who missed them - here they are.
1. WILL THE REAL DUMMY PLEASE STAND UP? AT&T fired President John Walter after nine months, saying he lacked intellectual leadership. He received a $26 million severance package. Perhaps it's not Walter who's lacking intelligence.
2. WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS: Police in Oakland, CA spent two hours attempting to subdue a gunman who had barricaded himself inside his home. After firing ten tear gas canisters, officers discovered that the man was standing beside them in the police line, shouting, "Please come out and give yourself up."
3. WHAT WAS PLAN B??? An Illinois man, pretending to have a gun, kidnapped a motorist and forced him to drive to two different automated teller machines, wherein the kidnapper proceeded to withdraw money from his own bank accounts.
4. THE GETAWAY! A man walked into a Topeka, Kansas Kwik Stop and asked for all the money in the cash drawer. Apparently, the take was too small, so he tied up the store clerk and worked the counter himself for three hours until police showed up and grabbed him.
5. DID I SAY THAT??? Police in Los Angeles had good luck with a robbery suspect who just couldn't control himself during a lineup. When detectives asked each man in the lineup to repeat the words: "Give me all your money or I'll shoot", the man shouted, "That's not what I said!".
6. ARE WE COMMUNICATING??? A man spoke frantically into the phone: "My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart". "Is this her first child?" the doctor asked. "No!" the man shouted, "This is her husband!"
7. NOT THE SHARPEST TOOL IN THE SHED! In Modesto, CA, Steven Richard King was arrested for trying to hold up a Bank of America branch without a weapon. King used a thumb and a finger to simulate a gun... Unfortunately, he failed to keep his hand in his pocket. (hellooooooo)!
8. THE GRAND FINALE!!! Last summer, down on Lake Isabella, located in the high desert, an hour east of Bakersfield, CA, some folks, new to boating, were having a problem. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn't get their brand new 22 foot boat, going. It was very sluggish in almost every maneuver, no matter how much power they applied. After about an hour of trying to make it go, they putted into a nearby marina, thinking someone there may be able to tell them what was wrong. A thorough topside check revealed everything in perfect working condition. The engine ran fine, the out-drive went up and down, and the propeller was the correct size and pitch. So, one of the marina guys jumped in the w ater to check underneath. He came up choking on water, he was laughing so hard.NOW REMEMBER...THIS IS TRUE.
Under the boat, still strapped securely in place, was the trailer!
Art was finally able to recognize Dan Gardner for perfect attendance. The final perfect attendance award will go to Jeff Long the next time he shows up. Go figure!
James Gorry came forward to thank Rotarians for hosting his inbound exchange student adventure reporting that his first week had been very busy. He also said it was one of the best weeks of his life and expected the upcoming year to be one of the best years of his life. Welcome James!
Richard Weed came forward to announce that both outbound students were “out” and that he had received a message from Austin’s mother because Austin’s family in Guatemala did not yet have an Internet connection. His time on the Internet was limited to what he could cue up for at school. Austin is doing fine and had survived giving his first speech to his Guatemalan Rotary club in Spanish.

Walt Haight reintroduced his guest Rhonda Fabreth. Rhonda told us about the Oregon Vintage Festival now in progress benefiting Henderson House and Mac athletics referencing Kyle Chambers’ upcoming cross-country competition. 35 wineries are involved and Rotarians were invited to come out this weekend and experience the Festival.

Linfield President Tom Hellie was joined by his sponsor Bruce Wyatt for his formal induction into the Rotary Club of McMinnville by Past President John Larsen. John gave a brief history of Rotary, read the Object of Rotary and recapped some of our accomplishments. He welcomed Tom by presenting him with his official badge and pin, the history book and a framed copy of the Four Way Test. The glass covering the Four Way Test had cracked in transit so it became the “broken Four Way Test”. It will be replaced. A big welcome to Tom Hellie.
Ray Fields has been hard at work on the District’s new web site. He provided a helpful PowerPoint presentation demonstrating how to log onto the new site. He explained that the District wants our e-mail addresses and some other information to simplify communications. He urged all Rotarians to take the following steps as soon as possible:

President Art Bradley recapped his and Brenda’s trip to the Rotary International Convention in Copenhagen Denmark and Malmo Sweden. The theme was appropriately “Bridging the World”. Art entered the techno world of PowerPoint (with a little help from Ray) and shared slides of the convention. Due to limited time, he did not share many of the “tourist” slides – but this writer would wager that there are members who would enjoy a little more about the countries visited. Maybe another time.
We saw slides of Tivoli Gardens and Art did bring back a stuffed Viking sporting colors of both Denmark’s and Sweden’s flags. We also noticed that Johannes Goddik was paying very close attention to Art’s presentation.
Art was struck by the size and power of Rotary. His slides showed the size of the venue that still took three gatherings to accommodate all attending. He enjoyed the House of Friendship where he was surprised at the number of special fellowships. I don’t think he discovered a Rotarian Fellowship for Tri-athletes – but he did discover a Rotarian Fellowship for Convention Goers! Even if he didn’t discover a group of tri-athletes, he was able to find some great places to run and keep in his iron-man condition.
CLOSING
We are looking forward to hearing from Ryan Simpson next Friday. Ryan was our candidate at this year’s RYLA event. President Art announced that there would be a short pecial board meeting following today's meeting. He then adjourned the meeting.
