ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

PARTNERS IN SERVICE

PDG Ed Gronke, Vice Chairperson

Program Presentation Date for your Club Overview

The concept of Partners in Service was created by PDG Brad Howard of District 5170 in 2002. Our purpose in bringing this program to District 5100 is to provide every Rotarian the opportunity to experience first hand the internationality of Rotary, while also providing a full understanding of the work performed by local Rotary Clubs throughout the world. Through this program we hope to unite our local Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interact club members with our counterparts worldwide, in an effort to promote better understanding of the global community of which we are a part.

We are inviting seven of District "s 5100"s Partners in Service to join us from September 17th through September 30th 2006. They will represent many areas of the world in which our district has completed or is currently working on projects. During this two-week visit we hope each Rotary Club will accept a presentation from one of our Partners at a regular meeting. They would provide the regular program for the Rotary Club as well as attend special social events arranged by the clubs in the evening. Their presentation will include the projects, which they are doing through the clubs in the District, as well as acknowledge the importance of the contributions made by Rotarians in this District. Specifically they will explain the difference in the lives of people that Rotary is making.

On Saturday, September 23, 2006, we will hold a club project fair featuring both Local and International Projects. This will be open to all Rotary, Rotaract and Interact clubs as well as organizations that have partnered or wish to partner with Rotary. Our Partners In Service will be available to meet personally with clubs that are interested in making a connection with an International Partner or to simply explore the idea of establishing an International Project. Our Foundation Committee will be conducting training sessions to assist those clubs in all areas, from selecting an international partner to defining a project and successfully completing that project.

Our Partners
Our Partners In Service who will join us are Rotarians capable of making presentations that will impact the audience in a positive way. These individuals will have had hands-on involvement with managing and developing international projects in the District. They will each have the ability to effectively speak in English and will provide multi-media presentations that include pictures and graphics to vividly convey their thanks and the impact of the projects completed.

Paul Harris's message to the Rotary Club of New Orleans, May 1917.

"After having lived with Rotary during the twelve years of its existence, I can, with fervor and sincerity, say that my faith in its destiny has constantly increased from the day of it birth.

Rotary is and ever has been a little in advance of, and yet in keeping with the tendency of the times. Rotary is not, like some other good influences, so far removed from the practical everyday problems of life as to seem at times entirely disconnected. Rotary is simple, genuine, true. It abhors deceit and pretentiousness, and had rather run risk of under-rating than to run the risk of over-extolling its own virtues."

Ryan closed member recognition with the following story:

Some retired deputy sheriffs went to a retreat in the mountains. To save money, they decided to sleep two to a room. No one wanted to room with Daryl because he snored so badly. They decided it wasn't fair to make one of them stay with him the whole time, so they voted to take turns.

The first deputy slept with Daryl and comes to breakfast the next morning with his hair a mess and his eyes all bloodshot. They said, "Man, what happened to you?" He said, "Daryl snored so loudly, I just sat up and watched him all night."

The next night it was a different deputy's turn. In the morning, same thing--hair all standing up, eyes all blood-shot. They said, "Man, what happened to you? You look awful!" He said, "Man, that Daryl! shakes the roof. I watched him all night."

The third night was Frank's turn. Frank was a big burly ex-football player; a man's man. The next morning he came to breakfast bright eyed and bushy tailed. "Good morning," he said.

They couldn't believe it! They said, "Man, what happened?" He said, "Well, we got ready for bed. I went and tucked Daryl into bed and kissed him good night. He sat up and watched me all night long."

MAIN EVENT

Bob Emrick introduced guest speaker Alan Evans from Thugz Off Drugs and gave a brief background about Alan’s organization.

Alan has organized Thugz Off Drugs, a community effort to deal with crime by reaching out to those in the community with serious drug abuse.  Alan came from a broken family and was raised in an environment of drugs.  He hit rock bottom when he was 40 years old while living in Astoria.  He could find no way out of his lifestyle and used crime as a survival tool.  Finally, he made a decision to make a change.  Someone gave him a few dollars and he pulled himself out of his old lifestyle – with the help of some prayer and a changed attitude.  He found a place to sleep in an Astoria restoration house, got a job and started saving a little money.

Alan formed the Thugz Off Drugs organization in Astoria by opening a home for drug addicts.  The organization now serves 140 people in 3 counties in Oregon.  90% are from broken families.  The Astoria City Council provided a $1,000 grant which allowed them to open their first home for addicts.

Alan now has his family back and all family members are healthy, clean and off drugs.  He feels very blessed.  The organization is now in Yamhill County where Alan says the citizens are providing wonderful support.

A brochure was provided that tells about Thugz Off Drugs.  They are recommending that individuals and organizations begin supporting this valuable program in our community by enrolling in the “adopt a bed” program.

A “Drug-Free Community Jamboree” will be held on September 9th.  Raffle tickets are available for sale with very attractive items available, including some all-expense-paid weekends at the beach!

Alan’s remarks were followed by several questions from club members.  Bob Emrick introduced Mike Caruso, a Newberg Rotarian who is on the local and statewide board of Alan’s organization.

CLOSING

Dan Gardner after advising Alan that a book would be donated in his name to McMinnville's early reader program he adjourned the meeting shortly after 1:00PM.
