ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

From the District GSE Chair

Our District GSE Committee has launched our search throughout the District for qualified applicants for our Outbound GSE Team to S.E. Australia.  Please help us spot qualified applicants.  You know that GSE is a service opportunity for young business and professional people.  It is a vocational and cultural exchange, to learn in an international environment and stay with Rotarian family hosts.  And it is open to young business/professional people between 25 and 40 years of age. You are our District's best “eyes and ears” - please think about young business and professional people you know, and encourage them to apply..

Attached is a colorful flyer (PDF format) for you to use and distribute in:
  • business acquaintences, employers in your area, local governments, etc.
  • trade associations, professional organizations and occupational groups you are affiliated with, or which are in your area, so they can alert their members
  • local governments, hospitals, and other institutions in your area
  • Rotary Alumni (GSE, Ambassadorial Scholars, etc.)
  • local media, newsletter writers, radio or TV talk shows, if you can; to pitch story ideas
(FYI Doug Porter, District 5100 Public Relations person, is preparing a news release, and can send these if you prefer.
Check the District Directory for his contact information.
Please review the flyer - it has all the particulars of deadline, where to get apps, where to send them, what the trip is about, non-Rotary progeniture, etc.

Please be generous ... share this program by sending several cover letters and flyers.
Each of the people you send it to may know of a perfect GSE candidate ... if only we ask them.
Thanks for your time in helping to spread the word, and call if you have questions.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Stewart Martin, GSE Chair (and WCS Committee member)

MEMBER RECOGNITION & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Chuck Pattishall filled in for Ryan Arzner. He recognized Dave Pfendler for 4 decades of wedded bliss with the same wife they will celebrate this coming Sunday.

Walter Haight was recognized for his upcoming anniversary and left a check for "how many years it felt like he'd been married," rather than the number he'd actually been married.

Patrick Fuchs will celebrate his birthday on Sunday...and his wife will take him to get a video game.

Tom Tankersley announced the arrival of his first grandchild.

Bruce Wyatt announced that Linfield Men & Women golf teams had recently been ranked in Golf Digest with other top schools like Harvard and Princeton.  Will Linfield now be considered "Ivy League"???

Chuck Pattishall lost in water basketball to Dianne Haugeberg, so he presented her with a trophy and requested a re-match next year.  She is the 2006 H-O-R-S-E champion.

Chuck Pattishall closed with a very confusing piece --  "The Redneck's Family Tree."

(*See below)

Kristi Brill reviewed the most recent issue of the Rotarian Magazine.  She pointed out articles in the August issued that featured Rotarians in the Gulf Coast,Oregonian quotes and stories, as well as identity theft, wine fundraisers and Rotary basics.

Art Bradley was prepared to present "perfect attendance" awards to Dan Gardner and Jeff Long...but neither were present.  Hmmmm....they must be good at online make-ups.

MAIN EVENT

Bob Emrick continued his "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" presentation.  His emphasis was on executing your vision and your personal mission statement.  Bob also talked about private victory -vs- public victory and how essential trust is in all relationships.

He discussed win-win.  The 6 paradigms of human interaction are:  win-win, win-lose, lose-win, lose-lose, win, win-lose.  He said you should be in relationships that are win-win -- relationships where things work for both parties, or they don't happen.  Win-win is essential for any long term relationship.

Bob was able to briefly get to Habit 5:  Seek first to understand others, then to be understood.  He emphasized that we must understand and hear first.  We all need to be challenged to listen with a virtuous heart.

CLOSING

President Art  adjourned the meeting.

*The Redneck's Family Tree

Many many years ago when I was twenty-three,
I got married to a widow who was pretty as could be.

This widow had a daughter who had hair of red.
My father fell in love with her, and soon the two were wed.

This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life.
My daughter was my mother, for she was my father's wife.

To complicate the matters worse, although it brought me joy,
I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy.

My little baby then became a brother-in-law to Dad.
And so became my uncle, though it made me very sad.

For if he was my uncle, then that also made him brother
To the widow's grown-up daughter who, of course, was my step-mother.

Father's wife then had a son, who kept them on the run.
And he became my grandson, for he was my daughter's son.

My wife is now my mother's mom and it surely makes me blue.
Because, although she is my wife, she is my grandma too.

If my wife is my grandmother, then I am her grandchild.
And every time I think of it, It simply drives me wild.

For now I have become the strangest case you ever saw.
As the husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa!
