ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"
SOMETHING NEW
Beginning with this issue of the Pacesetter, we will be communicating information from Board members and Committee Chairs and members that will be of particular interest to the club's membership. From the Club Secretary:
If there is a death in the family, illness, or some other event that the club should send a card, flowers, or a plant, please let me know so that I might take care of that. Also, please get your make-up information to me as quickly as possible. Thanks for your cooperation. Teresa Smith.
From the Membership Chair:
New membership proposal forms are available from the Club Secretary and will be available online shortly. It is very important to remember that you should NOT inform the individual you are proposing for membership that you are doing that until after the Board has approved the proposal and the time for objections from club members following publication in this bulletin has passed. Please remember that the District Governor Tom has challenged each of us to bring in one new member to our club this year. Jack Crabtree
From the Rotary Foundation of RI (TRF) Chair:
The first of July began a new Rotary fiscal year. District Governor Tom has challenged every club in the District to be a 100% sustaining membership club. He has pledged to give $100. to TRF for every club that reaches this goal. Let's show him early on what the Rotary Club of McMinnville membership can do. Let's be a club of Every Rotarian Every Year. $100 is such a small amount of money and it can do so much good. Thanks for your support. Ray Fields

MEMBER RECOGNITION & ANNOUNCEMENTS
Ryan Arzner, trying to resist his usual, post-noon, “good morning” greeting got thins started.
Maryalice Russell celebrated her 14 anniversary.
Bemoaning the increasing number of years in his life-span, but noting that “the alternative is worse” was Kelly Odegaard.
Richard Weed seemed mildly stunned when reminded of his anniversary.
Patrick Fuchs celebrated his 13th anniversary being married to Lisa.
Chuck Pattishall encouraged attendance at Galary Theater’s, Seven Year Itch (“A great play, I only have a small part.”), August 11-26.
Walt Haight passed around a picture of the newly installed vintage light stand (one of several) which our club donated. These stands have recently been erected along Third Street.
Bruce Huffman reminded us of the 7:00 concert next Thursday in the Meadow at Hillside Retirement Communities.

Past President John Larsen continued the award presentations from his presidential year by honoring Lee Vasquez with a beautiful clock for his prodigious work on behalf of Wine and Art. Patrick Fuchs was also honored by his continuous sponsorship of our club website and his efforts at the Wine and Art Auction.
We learned that our speaker failed to appear. Thus (in some measure of desperation), President Art called Brent Adams to report on Brent’s activities at his recent high school reunion in Montana. Brent proceeded to try to convince us of the dangers of imbedding too much and thus doing something foolish—like get a tattoo. He then flashed an extended viewing of a pro-beer tattoo on his shoulder; only to eventually announce that is merely a removable patch.
Gretchen Olson (a recent speaker at the club) is reminding us that the week of October 15-22 is dedicated to promoting Hands and Words Are Not For Hurting (a program she chairs in our region). She has posters and pledge cards available to be placed in businesses. Contact President Art if you could participate in this important publicity effort. He has the necessary materials.
The group study exchange (GSE) program of The Rotary Foundation is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young business and professional men and woman between the ages of 25 and 40 and in the early years of their professional lives. The program provides travel grants for team to exchange visits between paired areas in different countries. For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country's institutions and ways of life, observe their own vocations as practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas. Our District is looking for individuals to be Group Study Exchange team members from our District to Australia this next year. Individuals can not be related to Rotarians to participate.
Perfect Attendance certificates were given to: Lee Vasquez—7 years, Brent Adams—6 years, Ron Benek—4 years, Not present to collect their Perfect Attendance certificates (but certainly meeting make-up users) were: Dan Gardner—4 years, Jeff Long—4 years, Norm Goss received his 48th year Perfect Attendance award! We properly honored Norm with a standing ovation.
Ray Fields reminded us that $1,000 from the basketball fundraiser was set-aside to get a Blane matching grant for immunizations from the Rotary Foundation. He explained that he is working with Virgina Garcia Memorial Clinics to develop a project that will meet the criteria for the matching grant and will allow for Rotarian involvement. He explained that in the past it was easier for Rotarians to volunteer for such projects. but now with the HIPPA regulations, it is more difficult to find ways in which volunteers can participate. Once a project is defined we will be looking for volunteers to help.
MAIN EVENT
The scheduled speaker for today did not appear. In his place came an outstanding informative session. Maryalice Russell noted that Rotarians will be invited to a BBQ prior to a high school football game to honor Rotarians and our service to the community and schools. Maryalice then asked President Art for permission to speak about the revised School Bond measure recently approved by the Board. President Art quickly agreed. The following are points she made and answers to member’s questions:
Cost reduction of the measure would be $1.71/$1,000 (rather than the $2.59/$1,000 of the first measure); Maryalice noted our tax base is considerably smaller than many districts (thus requiring our District to tax at higher rate).
Our district does not have a mandated contribution to the school district from developers. Maryalice noted pros and cons; this is “not a great solution”.
Only 23% of voters have school-aged children; there still seemed to be substantial support from seniors (who made up the largest voting block).
Year-round and double-shifting are distinct possibilities given our projected growth rates.
The 400 residents included in the phone survey each reported voting in the last election (but a later check found that only about half did, indeed, vote).
Bond monies only go for facilities—all salary resources come from state funds.
Citizens have been directly involved in architectural planning.
What about purchasing a plan already built in another district? It would be expensive and unlikely to comply with current and local codes.
How citizens could be involved in assisting the District:
--There is an open advisory meeting every Tuesday at 5:15PM in the WOW classroom..
--This coming Monday the School Board is meeting at 7:30PM to finalize the new proposal
--Contact Maryalice for a tour.
Our appreciation for Maryalice’s presentation was clearly evident in long and warm applause.
CLOSING
Bruce Huffman observed, “That was one of the best non-planned meetings we’ve ever had.” He indicated that up coming planned meetings include: Chehalem Youth Programs, Linfield Football Coach Joe Smith, and a report from President Art on his attendance at the international convention
John Larsen suggested that we donate a book in honor of Maryalice’s presentation.
NEXT WEEK: Bob Emrick speaking. President Art adjourned the meeting.
