Erin Stephenson ended the session with a story about “Dad’s” role during the child birthing experience (a topic close to Erin’s heart!). President John Larsen said that Erin’s joke this week “totally eclipsed” Ryan’s jokes . For those of you who missed this classic here it is.
A married couple went to the hospital together to have their baby delivered.
Upon their arrival, the doctor said he had invented a new machine that would transfer a portion of the mother's labor pain to the father. He asked if they were willing to try it out. They were both very much in favor of it.
The doctor set the knob to 10 percent for starters, explaining that even 10 percent was probably more pain than the father had ever experienced before. But as the labor progressed, the husband felt fine, so he asked the doctor to go ahead and bump it up a notch. The doctor then adjusted the machine to 20 percent pain transfer.
The husband was still feeling fine. The doctor checked the husband's blood pressure and pulse and was amazed at how well he was doing. At this, they decided to try for 50 percent. The husband continued to feel quite well. Since it was obviously helping out is wife considerably, he encouraged the doctor to transfer ALL the pain to him. The wife delivered a healthy baby with virtually no pain. She and her husband were ecstatic.
When they got home, the mailman was dead on their porch.
Art Bradley, incoming Club President, expressed appreciation for the Club’s help in sending him to the International Rotary Convention. He said it was very enlightening and encouraging to sense the strength of the Rotary organization. Art also reported that there will be a going-away party for Filip Fidler, exchange student, at Richard’s Weed’s home on June 28th. In addition, there will be a “Demotion” party for outgoing President John Larsen on July 7th at the Senior Center. Please put these events on your calendar.
Colin Armstrong gave an announcement regarding the Yamhill County Historical Society. The current building housing the Society in Lafayette is completely full and there is a project on-going to find a new home. Land has been donated for the new Society building. Colin and his wife had a very successful garage sale raising $15,000 for the project. They are now preparing for another sale to be held at the new site during July 6, 7 and 8. They have Gift Certificates available to purchase for the sale. Please see Colin or his wife to participate in this very worthwhile community project.
Main event
Our own Chuck Pattishall shared a stirring Search & Rescue story that directly involved him a few years ago. We found out that Chuck has a very interesting and diversified background. He is a former deputy sheriff, medic, scuba diving expert, and experienced search & rescue team member. In May of 1997, he put his skills to work on a very difficult search and rescue mission at Chapman Point near Cannon Beach. In this incident, one boy was successfully rescued from a steep cliff, one boy died from injuries sustained in a fall from the cliff before rescue teams arrived, and one man and his son were injured but successfully rescued after their attempt to rescue the two boys.
Chuck was a primary participant in the successful rescue by scaling over the cliff and rescuing one of the boys. In addition, Chuck’s team, accompanied by the Coast Guard, successfully rescued attorney John Gray (now our Yamhill County Council) and John’s son who were attempting to rescue the boy who died.
Thankfully, Chuck, his team, and three of the people involved were all safe in the end. Chuck provided an excellent video that recreated the rescue. Thanks for your great work, Chuck, and for sharing it with us!
CLOSING
President John Larsen thanked Chuck for the excellent presentation. He also reminded members that there would be a short Board meeting following the club meeting today to deal with East Salem Rotary's proposal for creation of a new standing committee within Rotary International.. The board decided not to support East Salem's proposal.
The meeting was closed with the reciting of the Four Way Test.
This was John Larsen’s last meeting as President!! Great Job, John, and THANK YOU for your excellent leadership this year. We look forward to having Art Bradley serving as our new president starting July 1, and his leadership next week.A MESSAGE FROM DELANEY
I apologize for not having written in such a long time. And I'm sorry this message will be so short.
For the past four months I've been in practice leading up to the biggest dance festival in Japan-- it's called Yosakoi Soran. This year over 314 teams and 40,000 people participated, and I was on one of the teams. One of the reasons I never had time to write a message was because I had practice up until nine or ten almost daily. It was really intense, and one of hardest things for me to deal with physically and mentally. But when it came to the actual festival, it was one of the highlights of my exchange. We had 26 performances in the weekend of the festival (two weekends ago). I witnessed a lot of great performances, and everyone was filled with such adrenaline and passion for it that I really got caught up in the moment and enjoyed it.
I've also joined the Folk Song Club at school (which is really Punk Rock, but we don't tell anyone that), and I'm practicing about five hours a day for a live we have at the school festival in July. I play bass guitar for three songs-- we're covering Sex Pistols (which means I get to play badly on purpose!), and two Japanese bands-- Asian Kung-Fu Generation and Judy & Mary. It's a lot of fun but my entire life pretty much revolves around club right now, and Rotary. A lot of my other exchange friends have gone home or are in the process of going home. It's really sad to see most of them go. On exchange you learn a lot through the culture you immerse yourself in, but you also learn a lot fo things about the world by meeting people from places you've never been or known anything beyond stereotypes about.
I haven't done much else. I went on a skiing trip, I went to a few festivals and a Bon Jovi concert! And I moved once. But mostly I've just been busy with Yosakoi and Club, and haven't had internet connection for almost a month, so I'm sorry I haven't written in a long time. And I'm sorry this message is so short. But I'm back home in America in a month, and I think I'll be able to talk for hours about what's happened to anyone willing to listen.
Take Care!
