ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

opening

Today’s “Welcoming Team” was Kristi Brill and Al Owen.

Dale Tomlinson shared reminiscences of a recent trip to Eastern Europe, particularly memories of the evidence of hatred and hostility.  He contrasted that with the peaceful and helpful/healthful benefits of Rotary around the world.

President John led us in the salute to the US flag.

INTRODUCTION OF VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS

Dan Gardner introduced his Keith Knoernschild, a friend from Mt. Vernon, WA and a rafting buddy.

Bruce Wyatt introduced Dr. Tom Hellie, new President of Linfield College and future noon Rotary Club member, after which a positive and pleasant murmur rose from the Club.

Ray Fields introduced Tomomi Matsuzuki (left) a Linfield exchange student from Kyoto, Japan  and Heidi Czarnecki, (right)  visiting Rotarian and Past President of the McMinnville Sunrise Clan.

Bob Rhoads introduced Mike DeRochier, visiting Rotarian from the Salem Downtown Rotary Club.

Al Owen introduced Austin Wuellner, outbound exchange student heading to Guatemala.

Wayne Bailey introduced his wife, Nicollete Bailey

Kris Olsen introduced Kent & Tami Stuart, (above left) and Jim & Tina Chase, (above right) parents of the May Students-of-the-Month at McMinnville High School.

MEMBER RECOGNITION & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ryan Arzner allowed John Elliot to acknowledge his recent celebration of his 14th wedding anniversary.

Al Hansen also acknowledged his wedding anniversary and made an “appropriate contribution” to the Club.

Ryan Arzner fessed up to having celebrated his 6th wedding anniversary and contributed $10 to the Club—because it seemed like it had been ten years—to which several female members groaned.  Then he proceeded to spin some tale about horseback riding down at the Running Y resort.  Does anyone remember if this story had any deep thought we were supposed to catch.  Did his hair catch on fire or what?

Jon Triest reminded Club members of the reporting dates on sale of roses—to your captains.  Next Tuesday, June 6th is the last day to report!

Kris Olsen introduced the McMinnville High School Students of the Month for June, who were selected on the basis of their outstanding leadership abilities.

One of McMinnville High School’s student-of-the-month for June, senior Tara Stuart, representing Student Government. Tara is the daughter of Kent and Tami Stuart.  She has an older brother, Shane (21) Class of 2001, and younger sister Kelsey (16) sophomore at MHS. Tara attended Memorial Elementary and Duniway Middle School before enrolling at McMinnville High School in her freshman year. Tara currently holds a 3.98 grade point average and is ranked 19th in her graduating class of 453 seniors, she has been on honor roll each semester throughout her high school career.  This semester, she is enrolled in the Senior English, Student Leadership, and Weightlifting. While in high school, Tara has been active in our school’s volleyball program, having been selected as an all-league defensive specialist.  She was also selected this past fall as a News Register Fall Sports Award recipient.   She is also a member of the National Honor Society, Vice-President of Key Club, a member of the Doernbecker Club, Model United Nations Program, and was selected to represent her peers as this year’s Senior Class President. Outside of school, Tara works at J.C. Penney’s, and participates in club volleyball. Her future plans are to be dually enrolled at Linn Benton Community College and Oregon State University where she’ll play volleyball for Linn Benton and study Psychology at Oregon State.  She hopes to eventually obtain her Ph.D. in Psychology and be a practicing Psychologist.

One of McMinnville High School’s student-of-the-month for June, senior Andrew Seistrup, representing Associated Student Body Leadership. Andrew is the son of Gary Seistrup and (Jim) Tina Chase.  He has two younger sisters Jill (16) a junior at MHS, and Anna (14) a freshman at MHS.  Andrew attended Memorial Elementary and Patton Middle School before enrolling at McMinnville High School in his freshman year. Andrew currently holds a 3.37 grade point average and has been on honor roll many times throughout his high school career.  This semester, he is enrolled in United States Government, ASB Leadership, Yearbook, Song Writing, and Senior English.    While in high school, Andrew has played football, basketball, and golf.  Was a member of the Community Leadership Youth Program sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, has served on the school’s Site Council and has been the student envoy to the School Board this school year, and of course has been involved in student leadership – this year serving the school as the Associated Student Body President.  Andrew was also selected as the Oregon Association of Student Councils Northwest Representative. Outside of school, Andrew works at the Mac Theater, and plays in his church worship band.  Several of you will know Andrew from his participation in the Mr. Mac High Pageant these past three years. His future plans are to attend Film School at the Montana State University where upon graduation he’d like to pursue a career as a Film Director.

Kristi Brill reviewed two issues of the Rotarian for us as Pres John has been regularly moving her to the next week’s program.  In her normal, perky style, Kristi mentioned several of the articles that highlighted the positive effects of Rotary around the world.

Main event

Cory Graham introduced Tom, Tami & Nikki DeWhitt, from Carlton.  Tom proceeded to report on several trips he’s had in the last year to Haiti where he connected with an orphanage in great need—which matches the conditions of Haiti as a country.  Tom was moved to start a new non-profit organization to help meet the needs of that orphanage and named it Amber Outreach Project.  Even in one year it seems to have made a considerable difference in the lives of the children there.

CLOSING

President John thanked Tom for the program and mentioned the book that will be given to the schools in Tom’s name.  John proceeded to lead the Club in saying the four-way test together.

"When meeting day comes around, I do not have to decide whether to attend or not, for that has already been decided for me . . . it was one of the obligations I accepted when I joined Rotary." -- A Rotariann
