Al Hansen and Gary Rueter were fortunate to be at the same table as outbound student hopefuls Brooke Heller and Andrea McKenzie, rebounding Kaylie Wederquist, and newly inbound Sonsie Ang. At Ray Fields' table: Susan Aldrich, Donna Anessi, Yasuko Fields, Yasuko Nishimura, Shoji Nishimura and Makoto Koga. Brian Van Cleave introduced spouse, Robann, and one of his daughters, Angie Jordan. Phyllis Martin was with spouse, Norm Goss. Ez Koch introduced visiting Rotarians: Laurie LeCours from the Sunrise Club, and Ed Hoem from West Salem.Cy Jeter had to increase volume to be heard above the happily rowdy group in attendance. Members without a Rotary pin or shirt were assessed a dollar to start member recognition. Steve Fitzpatrick gave "an appropriate contribution" for his Sept. 1 birthday; Mike McKenzie's taking him to dinner. Stella Bohnsack hit the $ on the wheel, causing everyone to ante up a dollar. Scott Larsen paid what his anniversary is worth to his wife. Dave Pfendler said his 39th anniversary wrapped up "another notable year".Skip Huwaldt just celebrated 29 years of wedded bliss and added the upcoming year to his check of $30. Waldo Farnham shopped heavy equipment, and gave his wife, Bonnie, and '89 Kubota for their 32nd anniversary. Cy finally caught up with Ed Gormley, whose family business was featured in an Oregonian article. And thanks to the Oregonian, we all know what's on Vivian Bull's nitestand - correction: she read all the Agatha Christie novels on the digs not just one. Vivian thanked the members who kept the Summer Concert Series organized and tidy.
BACK WITH Paul Colbert presiding, Elaine Taylor bragged that McMinnville was one of ten school districts to be awarded a technology grant from the state. The $155,000 will help students keep current with computer technology. Dave Pfendler reported that 18 people owe a total of $1,200 from the Rose Sale.
GENTLE SOUNDS OF THE ORIENT. . . Ray Fields provided some background on the Koto, the lightweight wood musical instrument that came to Japan from China in the 7th or 8th century. Then we were treated to a musical journey of Eastern and Western style Japanese instrumentals and a medley of American favorites.
Yasuko Nishimura plays the koto as Makoto Koga plays the shakuhachi.
