June 5, 1998 Volume 77, Number 49
FOR THIS FIRST JUNE MEETING, it was self-greeting at the door. Bruce Dickson gave the invocation and Mike McKenzie led the pledge. Ray Wikle introduced his guests, Lillian Cox, The Salvation Army volunteer extraordinaire who is also Ray's mother-in-law, and Emma Lou Zamora of The Army Advisory Board. Soon-to-depart outbound student Andrea McKenzie was with us, along with outbound candidate Merei Lowe, and Sonsie Ang, our inbound student from the Philippines.
CY THE FINEMEISTER
Cy Jeter targeted Al Hansen first...Al having the good sense to have a portrait of himself and wife Carole published in the newspaper for their 30th anniversary. Al gave two checks, one for the anniversary and another to fulfill an obligation to the Rotary Foundation. Al said he had it on good authority that if you pay enough, Cy will leave you alone for a whole year....For his May 29th birthday, Mike Strange chose to spin the obsolete wheel with the low numbers, adding to the coffers. Dale Tomlinson also took a turn at the wheel spinning a 4 and 3 for his June 9 birthday. Two members share the same anniversary date - June 11 - although the years are different. Linda Stephenson said after 21 years, husband Rob has renewed the contract for another year. Gary Eastlund put in an extra contribution for celebrating his 16th anniversary with Kathy, AND the birth of his first granddaughter a week ago.
WELCOME A NEW MEMBER
Marsden "Mars" Smith, classification Commercial Bakery, was inducted with President Paul Colbert doing the honors in the absence of sponsor Bruce Huffman, away in San Diego. Paul made those of us not wearing our Rotary pins for this occasion pony up a dollar.
ANNOUNCING
DUCKY DERBY EVENTS, not to be confused with University of Oregon events, are District fund-raisers for the Children's Museum. There's the Ducky Derby Fancy Omelet Breakfast on June 13, and for $5 you're entered in the contest to win a duckcall or rubber ducky that Bill Hurliman said looked
just like Al Owen wearing his shades (Al modeled for us).
Speaking of Al, a.k.a. Bud Man, this is the last week of the ROSE SALE. Tell him ASAP if your count is increasing. The first place team in rose sales will receive many honors and words of appreciation. The last place team will be asked to resign from the club. In other words, sell roses! REMEMBER TO PICK UP YOUR ROSES THIS FRIDAY, JUNE 12, FROM 6:30 TO 8:15 A.M. AT YAMHILL COUNTY TITLE & ESCROW, 1215 NE Baker Street.
It was the last call from Bill Hurliman for the SPLENDORS OF ANCIENT EGYPT trip on June 16.
Vivian Bull is hosting the June 25 social for the McMinnville Chamber Working Women Forum.
AN UPDATE ON WILLAMETTE VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER
Rosemari Davis enlightened us on what's happening at our local hospital. Early next year, Willamette Valley Medical Center will be among the hospitals & facilities spinning off from Columbia HCA into a yet unnamed smaller parent company. NO name change locally. W.V.M.C. has set strategic initiatives including expanded services in cardiology and vascular surgery, establishing an Occupational Medicine section for businesses, and expanding Neurology/Neuro Surgery, Cancer, Psychiatry, Home Health Care, and In-Patient Rehabilitation services. Quality measurements on physician, employee and patient satisfaction are encouraging; 95% of patients rate their care as satisfactory or very satisfactory. Rosemari is especially proud of W.V.M.C's ranking as one of the top 100 hospitals for the past three years.
