July 18, 1997 - - Volume 77, Number 3

After warm greetings from Greeters Roger Hoy and Mike Strange, we again settled in for a surprisingly good reduced calorie summer lunch. How's the new menu? Do you like the new menu or do you want the old one back? I'm sure we'll be conducting a survey soon. Guests included Rolie, wife of Johannes Goddik; Andrea McKenzie and Brooke Heller, outbound candidates; Liz Heller, guest of Lee Vasquez; and Gene Sidell from Lincoln City Rotary and his guest Max Egger.

The first Rotary Summer Concert last Tuesday night at Linfield was a good show. It brought a lot of community recognition. Rotary people wore their Rotary shirts, looked good, and helped bring lots of that recognition.

Ray Fields announced that the Rotary home Web page is now up through Online Mac, address: WWW.ONLINEMAC.COM/ROTARY. Ray is also handling orders for Rotary shirts if you haven't got one yet.

Dave Pfendler revealed that there is still $6,000 to collect from the rose sale, and the race is getting intense to see who wins next years Chair of this event by being the last to pay. Ez Koch reported a great Rotary turnout for the turkey dinner cook last Saturday morning. Cy Jeter again lead us in member recognition. David Harjo and Van Keck got their pictures in the paper. Rosemari Davis had a classic front page shot that is now posted on the internet, but was not there to defend herself so she will undoubtedly get another chance. Rosemari set a new record raising over $16,000 for Hospice, out of the total from 7 Biggest Turkey candidates of $37,000. Incidentally, Rotarian Mary Grim was the 3rd Biggest Turkey, and Angel Mendoza, sponsored by Rotarian Mike Strange's business was 4th. Jan Fourier is going to the world's biggest Harley ride in Sturgis, SD. Eric Hansen and Bob Rhoades both celebrated their birthdays.

Jerry Wennstrom, Area Representative, brought greeting from the District Governor. Jerry had been meeting that morning with Paul and the Board on club goals and objectives. The District goal is 5% membership growth and 4 new clubs. A morning Newberg club is coming on line soon. Ez got up again and introduced State Senator Gary George. Gary made a very interesting report on his first term. He chaired the State Parks Committee and was on several other committees. He was very proud of a major funding increase to Parks that will ensure that no State Parks will be closed or sold, but instead will be rebuilt and restored. He also discussed Gov. Kitzhaber's proposed transportation bill that was defeated and explained why he voted against it. Gary was pessimistic that the Newberg-Dundee bypass would be a reality anytime soon; there is too much institutional pressure against new highways and for getting people out of their cars.

Next week will be a report from Ray Fields and Paul Colbert on the 1997 Rotary International Convention in Glascow, Scotland. Today's weather was almost a perfect summer day with clear skies, a high in the mid-80's. The after lunch Cycle ride didn't come off, but will be rescheduled for this Friday. Bring your cycle and RIDE!!!
